Modchips typically require some degree of technical skill to install since they must be connected to a console's circuitry, most commonly by soldering wires to select traces or chip legs on a system's circuit board.
Although there are modchips that can be reprogrammed for different purposes, most modchips are designed to work within only one console system or even only one specific hardware version. Most modchips consist of one or more integrated circuits ( microcontrollers, FPGAs, or CPLDs), often complemented with discrete parts, usually packaged on a small PCB to fit within the console system it is designed for.
They achieve this by either exploiting existing interfaces in an unintended or undocumented manner, or by actively manipulating the system's internal communication, sometimes to the point of re-routing it to substitute parts provided by the modchip. Modchips operate by replacing or overriding a system's protection hardware or software. They introduce various modifications to its host system's function, including the circumvention of region coding, digital rights management, and copy protection checks for the purpose of using media intended for other markets, copied media, or unlicensed third-party ( homebrew) software. About the SCPH-90004, that's one of the hardest to modchip, but nothing impossibile if you remember the basic rules of soldering: 1-never rush, it's not a race. After a couple of those you are ready to work on real stuff. Then, when you are confident enough with your skills, try something easy like a small electronic DIY kit you can buy online.
Buy a station, not an expnsive one, but at least one where you can regulate the heat (bought my first one for less than 20€ at my local hardware shop), and start practicing soldering and desoldering on old throwaway boards you can scavenge all around, like from old electronics. Gluing wires is never a good idea, because of various obvious reasons, while soldering is a skill every retro console buff should master.
